They are now disciples students of a Teacher--Jesus--who has a graduation goal in mind: Christlikeness. The Lord does not have a wish list of things He'd like to accomplish, He has a plan that he will. To encounter Jesus daily and have a relationship with Him changes everything; our focus becomes eternal.
Experience Jesus in such a way that His love-drenched, others-focused nature shapes your character. The spiritual practices in each chapter will challenge you to go deeper with Him. In this follow-up book, after deconstructing four counterfeit ways, Jersak explores seven facets of the Jesus Way. Christ's radical revelation. The Scriptures are an essential aspect of the Christian faith. But we have often equated them with the living Word Himself, even elevating them above the One to whom they point.
In doing so, we have distorted their central message--and our view of God. Tragically, this has caused multitudes of. As Baptists, we believe that Jesus is the one who justifies us to the Father with His work on the cross.
With that said, from the moment that we are a new creation and are indwelt with the Holy Spirit, we are called to be conformed to the image of Christ.
We call this process Sanctification. It is different than Justification in that Sanctification is lifelong action rather than a single act and is progressive. While justification will change our standing before God, sanctification changes our state on the earth as we live for Christ rather than for ourselves.
Corinth was a massive city in Greece and due to the size of the city, the church of Corinth was made up of people from many walks of life. Because of this, the church was simply confused in a lot of ways.
Because of this, Paul gives these infant believers some practical and theological assistance to help them out in their day to day living. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.
Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! Will this action edify self? Will it build me up? Will it profit me?
It will not build ourself up. It will not help us. Whenever we face such a situation, we should not do it. Whatever we do, we should make sure that it will build us to be more like Christ! Paul writes in verse 12 of that there are lawful things for him to do but not all of these lawful things are profitable! One such example that comes to mind is gambling. It is in Oklahoma and they have completely different laws and regulations for casinos.
Because of this, they have casinos all over the place! While gambling might be legal and exciting, I think that it is safe to say that it is not something profitable for a Christian to do. Another such example of something lawful but not profitable would be taking your paycheck and spending it all on chocolate or a snack that you really enjoy.
Likewise there are things that we can do, we have the legal right to do, but we should not do them because they are not profitable. They do not bring God glory and they do not build us to be more like Him. They do not help us so we simply do not partake in them. This does not mean that these activities are wicked or as bad as other actions are, but it does mean that we do not do them because we have other things to be doing that will help us grow into the image of Christ.
Sanctification requires maturity. Will this action enslave my soul? This must be our mentality today as well, church. We must not be mastered by anything except to be a slave of Jesus Christ! We must ask ourselves in the heat of the moment, will this action bring us into emotional, mental or psychological bondage? Will it enslave us? We have all heard of the technology pandemic sweeping the young people of the world.
Paul is directing them not to accept these condemnations , not to be pressured into rule-keeping as a way of earning acceptance, but to put their faith in the mercy and power of Christ alone.
Becoming like Jesus requires that we bring our vision of him and our life in him into a carefully thought out plan of spiritually forming disciplines which we apply to the details of our actual life. How do I get free of that sin and become more godly and loving? Be careful to avoid the empty and deceptive worldly philosophies and human traditions that are liable to take your attention off of the risen Christ in your midst as you face various challenges and opportunities in daily life and ministry.
For instance, when we look to experts or consultants we need to relate to them as assistants to Jesus, being careful always to listen to the Lord. Set your heart and mind on the risen Christ and yourself as risen from the dead with him. Rid yourself of anger and related sins, including slander and bad language. Put on your new self by renewing your knowledge of your Creator. Knowing God intimately helps you to become more like him.
In all your relationships clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Submit yourself to Christ the Lord so that his peace rules in your heart and flows from you to others. Be thankful to God. Paul says this seven times in these sections of Colossians! Be inspired by the word of Christ to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
Do this with gratitude in your heart.
